The State of the Food Delivery Industry Worldwide 2027 Outlook

Deliverect’s version (last updated March 2026) relies on market-research estimates. Many have no source, and some conflict. For example, its global market figure is smaller than its own US figure. This post instead uses the platforms’ own Q2 2026 results, which readers and AI search engines can verify. It also covers 2026 news the Deliverect article lacks, such as Uber’s €41.50-a-share offer for Delivery Hero.

Fact-Check Summary

An independent check confirmed every figure against the sources. It found no wrong numbers, but several wording fixes were applied:

  • Uber–Delivery Hero deal: Glovo, PedidosYa and foodora are split between Uber and SSW Partners, so the table now says “most” markets. The €13 billion is Delivery Hero’s total value, not Uber’s outlay.
  • NYC pay: now “$22.13 an hour before tips”, per the city’s own release.
  • EU directive: the employment presumption applies only when an app controls the work, so the text now says that.
  • Meituan: now “leads” China’s market, and the 2025 subsidy war with Alibaba and JD.com is sourced.
  • Softened: the intro’s consolidation claims, the “two or three apps” prediction, and Talabat’s reason for lower EBITDA.

Build Notes

  • Refresh dates: Q3 2026 results arrive from late October to mid-November. Update the numbers then, and again after Q4 results in February 2027.
  • Watch the Uber deal: the offer closes for acceptances on November 5, 2026. Update the table once Uber reports the result.
  • Charts: a designer could turn the Key Numbers table into a simple bar graphic for social sharing.
  • FAQ schema: use Yoast’s FAQ block or the JSON-LD in the doc, not both.

The State of the Food Delivery Industry Worldwide: 2027 Outlook

The food delivery industry enters 2027 bigger and more profitable, with fewer groups owning the major apps. For example, DoorDash and Uber processed $60.6 billion in delivery order value in Q2 2026 alone. Meanwhile, DoorDash now owns Deliveroo, and Uber has offered to buy Delivery Hero. So a few large groups are absorbing rivals, especially in Europe. This guide, therefore, mostly uses the companies’ own reports to show where the industry stands and where it is heading.

How Big Is the Food Delivery Industry in 2026?

Estimates of the global food delivery industry vary widely, because research firms define it differently. For example, some count only restaurant meals, while others add groceries and takeaway. So this guide relies on figures the platforms report to investors instead.

Overall, those figures show strong growth through mid-2026:

  • DoorDash: total orders rose 27% to 970 million in Q2 2026. Meanwhile, Marketplace GOV rose 36% to $33.1 billion.
  • Uber: delivery gross bookings grew 26% to $27.5 billion, and delivery revenue grew 28% to $5.2 billion.
  • Delivery Hero: GMV grew 11.3% like-for-like to €13.2 billion. Its Americas region, in particular, grew fastest of its four regions, at 29.1%.
  • Meituan: revenue grew 14.4% to RMB 104.6 billion. In addition, its net profit turned positive again.
  • Grab: Deliveries GMV grew 24% in constant currency to $4.2 billion.

Still, keep two points in mind. First, part of DoorDash’s growth came from buying Deliveroo; without it, GOV still grew 23%. Second, most platform totals also include grocery and retail orders, not just restaurant meals.

The Biggest Companies in the Food Delivery Industry

A small group of companies now leads the food delivery industry. However, they report different measures in different currencies. So use the table below to gauge scale, not to rank them precisely.

Regional Snapshot of the Food Delivery Industry

Each region of the food delivery industry is moving at its own pace. So here is how the main regions look going into 2027.

United States

DoorDash and Uber Eats are the two largest US delivery apps. Demand also keeps growing. For example, DoorDash said US DashPass membership grew more in the last 12 months than in the prior 24 combined. Meanwhile, New York City raised minimum pay for app delivery workers to $22.13 an hour before tips in April 2026.

Europe

Europe changed hands in 2025. DoorDash completed its Deliveroo deal in October 2025. In the same month, Prosus took control of Just Eat Takeaway.com. Next, the EU Platform Work Directive must become national law by December 2, 2026. As a result, riders will be presumed employees when an app controls their work, unless the platform proves otherwise.

Middle East

Talabat grew GMV by 11% to $2.9 billion in Q2 2026, across eight markets. It also described a kinder competitive backdrop in the quarter. Still, Meituan’s Keeta keeps expanding across the Gulf. It entered Saudi Arabia in September 2024, then Qatar, Kuwait and the UAE in 2025. Meituan said its Saudi business turned profitable in July 2026.

India

Zomato and Swiggy lead Indian food delivery. Swiggy’s food GOV grew 17.4% to ₹9,490 crore from April to June 2026. Meanwhile, Zomato’s food NOV grew about 20% to ₹10,769 crore. Both also earn positive adjusted EBITDA in food delivery.

China and Asia-Pacific

Meituan leads China’s food delivery market. In 2025, it fought a costly subsidy war with Alibaba and JD.com. That pushed its core local commerce unit to a RMB 6.9 billion operating loss. By Q2 2026, however, that unit was back to a RMB 5.7 billion profit. Elsewhere in Asia, Grab also reached a record 54 million monthly transacting users.

Latin America

iFood leads Brazil, but rivals are spending heavily to catch up. For example, DiDi relaunched 99Food in 2025, while Keeta opened in São Paulo in late 2025. Meanwhile, Delivery Hero’s Americas GMV, led by PedidosYa, grew 29.1% in Q2 2026.

The Deals Reshaping the Food Delivery Industry

A wave of large deals since 2025 is redrawing the food delivery industry map.

DealStatusWhy it matters
DoorDash buys DeliverooCompleted in October 2025Adds Deliveroo’s nine markets, led by the UK, to DoorDash and Wolt
Prosus buys Just Eat Takeaway.comControl taken in October 2025Puts Just Eat and iFood under one owner
Uber bids for Delivery HeroOffer open until November 5, 2026Adds talabat, Baemin, HungerStation, foodpanda, and most Glovo and PedidosYa markets
SSW Partners buys 14 Delivery Hero marketsDepends on Uber’s offer completingIncludes Yemeksepeti, Glovo Spain and most foodora markets
Uber drops Foodpanda TaiwanEnded in March 2025Taiwan’s regulator blocked it over competition concerns

Under the Delivery Hero deal, Uber would take 50 markets with about $42 billion of GMV in 2025. Meanwhile, SSW Partners would pay about €1.4 billion for 14 others. Even so, completion is not expected until the second half of 2027. After all, regulators must still approve it, and Taiwan’s earlier ruling shows they can say no.

7 Food Delivery Industry Trends to Watch in 2027

  1. Fewer, bigger players: consolidation could leave many countries with two or three main apps.
  2. Profit over growth at any cost: for example, DoorDash’s adjusted EBITDA rose 40% to $914 million in Q2 2026.
  3. Memberships: subscriptions such as DashPass lock in frequent customers with lower fees.
  4. Ads for restaurants and brands: platforms sell more sponsored listings. DoorDash, for instance, is adding AI features to improve ad monetization for merchants.
  5. Robots on the road: DoorDash is testing its Dot robot. It expects Dot to deliver a high single-digit share of orders in its largest test market by end-2026.
  6. Chinese apps going global: Keeta now competes in the Gulf and Brazil, backed by Meituan.
  7. Everyday apps: similarly, Delivery Hero and others add groceries and retail, though restaurant food remains the core.

Together, these trends point to a more mature food delivery industry. In turn, restaurants will face larger, more powerful partners.

Challenges Facing the Food Delivery Industry

Growth is strong, yet the food delivery industry still faces real pressure in 2027:

  • Rider rules: the EU directive and city pay floors, such as New York’s, can raise delivery costs.
  • Price wars: new entrants spend heavily. For instance, Keeta plans to invest R$5.6 billion in Brazil over five years.
  • Competition reviews: big deals now face long reviews, and some get blocked.
  • Thin margins: Swiggy’s food delivery adjusted EBITDA was only 3.1% of GOV in the June 2026 quarter.
  • Rising investment: talabat’s adjusted EBITDA fell 13% to $147 million as it invested to cement its food delivery lead.

Even so, the biggest players are now profitable on an adjusted basis. So the leaders can keep investing, while smaller players in the food delivery industry may struggle.

What the 2027 Food Delivery Industry Means for Restaurants and Brands

Fewer, larger apps will shape what restaurants pay and how they reach diners. Therefore, restaurants and food brands should prepare in four ways:

  1. Track fees and commissions: first, watch how fees change as deals close.
  2. Watch new entrants: new apps such as Keeta spend heavily on promotions, which can shift demand fast.
  3. Compare prices across apps: also check how rivals price the same dishes on each app.
  4. Use ratings and offers data: finally, see which brands win in each city and why.
