Largest Grocery Chains in Florida 2027 Store Counts, Market Share and Data

The largest grocery chains in Florida are led by Publix, which runs 898 of its 1,448 stores in the state. Walmart, Aldi, and Winn-Dixie follow, while warehouse clubs and Hispanic grocers fill key niches.

Meanwhile, the market is shifting fast. Florida now has more Aldi stores than any other state. In addition, Aldi bought Winn-Dixie’s parent in 2024, then sold or converted hundreds of its stores.

This guide ranks the chains and then explains market share. It also shows what grocery data you can collect from each one.

Market Share of the Largest Grocery Chains in Florida

Publix leads by a wide margin. For example, Chain Store Guide data showed Publix with nearly 47% of the Miami market in 2023. By contrast, Walmart held 15%, and Costco held 8%.

Earlier, Shelby Market Research put Publix at 60.2% in South Florida, 52.9% in Central Florida and 46.6% in North Florida. Those figures used 2020 data.

Store counts tell a similar story. In 2024, a Washington Post analysis found Publix ran 29% to 41% of grocery stores in six Tampa Bay counties. Meanwhile, Winn-Dixie and Aldi together held 15% to 28%, while Walmart held 14% to 17%.

However, these shares predate many Aldi conversions of Winn-Dixie stores. So the balance among the largest grocery chains in Florida may look different by 2027.

1. Publix: Leader Among the Largest Grocery Chains in Florida

George W. Jenkins founded Publix in Winter Haven, Florida, in 1930. Today, the employee-owned chain is based in Lakeland and also employs more than 260,000 people.

According to its facts and figures page, Publix had retail sales of $62.7 billion in 2025. In addition, 898 of its 1,448 stores are in Florida. That makes it the clear leader among the largest grocery chains in Florida.

Growth has slowed, though. In the second quarter of 2026, sales rose 1% to $15.7 billion, while comparable-store sales fell 0.5%. Publix pointed to lower drug prices under the Inflation Reduction Act and weaker consumer spending.

For delivery, Publix began working with Instacart in a Miami pilot in July 2016. In fact, that pilot covered 37 ZIP codes from Hallandale Beach to South Miami.

2. Walmart and Sam’s Club in Florida

Walmart serves Florida shoppers at 390 retail units and online through Walmart.com. Its formats include Supercenters, Neighborhood Markets, and Sam’s Club warehouse clubs. In addition, it employs 120,498 associates in the state.

Walmart also spent $8.8 billion with Florida suppliers in fiscal 2025. As a result, it supported 63,937 supplier jobs in Florida, according to the company.

It keeps investing in the state, too. For example, it opened a next-generation Supercenter in Jacksonville in February 2026. That store offers delivery in as little as an hour and added 400 jobs. Then, in March 2026, another one opened in The Villages.

Meanwhile, 58 Florida stores were slated for remodels during 2026. In Miami, Walmart held 15% of the grocery market in 2023, second only to Publix. So it ranks second among the largest grocery chains in Florida.

3. Aldi in Florida

Florida has more Aldi stores than any other state. In September 2025, Tasting Table counted 269 Florida stores, ahead of Illinois with 215.

Since then, the count has kept rising. By March 12, 2026, Aldi’s website listed 302 Florida stores open or opening, according to the Business Observer. Aldi is also building a distribution center in Duval County, projected to open in 2027.

Nationally, Aldi plans to reach about 2,800 stores in 2026 and 3,200 by the end of 2028. Part of this growth comes from converting former Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores.

4. Winn-Dixie and the Aldi Deal

Winn-Dixie was founded in 1925 and is based in Jacksonville. In March 2024, Aldi completed its purchase of Southeastern Grocers, the parent of Winn-Dixie and Harveys. The deal covered about 400 stores across the South.

Then, in February 2025, Aldi sold about 170 unconverted stores to an investor group. The buyers included CEO Anthony Hucker and C&S Wholesale Grocers. By contrast, Aldi kept about 220 stores to convert to its own format by 2027.

In October 2025, the Winn-Dixie parent also moved to exit 40 stores in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi. After that, it expected to run about 130 grocery stores and 140 liquor stores. It then renamed itself The Winn-Dixie Company in January 2026.

So Winn-Dixie is now a smaller, Florida-focused chain. Still, it remains one of the largest grocery chains in Florida by store count.

Other National Chains Among the Largest Grocery Chains in Florida

Beyond the top five, several national chains also compete for Florida grocery spending:

  • Costco: it held 8% of the Miami grocery market in 2023, ranking third there. See our Costco API.
  • BJ’s Wholesale Club: it opened clubs in Lecanto, Ocala and Port St. Lucie in 2026, reaching 46 Florida clubs.
  • Target: it sells groceries alongside general goods. In Sarasota County, Target ran 6% of grocery stores in 2024.
  • Sprouts Farmers Market: this natural grocer ran 5% of grocery stores in Hillsborough County in 2024.
  • Save A Lot: meanwhile, this discount chain held 4% to 7% of stores in Pasco, Pinellas, and Polk counties.
  • Whole Foods Market: the Amazon-owned natural grocer also operates across Florida. See our Whole Foods API.

In addition, Trader Joe’s and The Fresh Market run specialty stores across the state. So the largest grocery chains in Florida face competition at every price point.

Hispanic and Regional Grocers in Florida

South Florida also has strong Hispanic grocers. Their product mix can differ from national chains, so they matter for assortment and price data.

  • Sedano’s: Cuban exile René Sedano opened the first store in 1961. Today, the Miami-based chain runs about 35 stores in Miami-Dade, Broward, Orange, and Osceola counties, per Wikipedia.
  • Fresco y Más: this Hispanic-focused banner was left out of the Aldi deal, according to Wikipedia.
  • Presidente Supermarket and Bravo Supermarkets: both also serve Hispanic shoppers across South Florida.

Sedano’s is often described as the largest Hispanic-owned supermarket chain in the US. However, it is much smaller than the largest grocery chains in Florida by store count.
