Grocery Price Dashboard: Track Average Prices by State and Category (2027)

Grocery Price Dashboard Track Average Prices by State and Category (2027)

A grocery price dashboard shows average grocery prices by state, category, and retailer in one view. For brands, retailers, and analysts, it reveals where prices rise fastest and where rivals undercut you. So you can act on regional price gaps, not national averages.

State gaps are large, too. In the second quarter of 2026, for example, Hawaii’s grocery cost index was 135.8, against a US average of 100. By contrast, Oklahoma’s was 94.1.

This guide covers the KPIs, data, calculations, and pages you need for a grocery price dashboard in 2027.

QuestionShort answer
What does it track?Average prices by state, category, retailer and week
Where does the data come from?Store-level prices from retailer sites, plus public benchmarks
How are averages calculated?Unit prices across a fixed basket, weighted across stores
Which tool?Power BI, Tableau, or Looker Studio
How often?Weekly for most teams, while daily suits fast-moving categories

What a Grocery Price Dashboard Should Show

A good grocery price dashboard answers a few clear questions:

  • Which states are the most and least expensive for our categories?
  • Which categories are rising fastest this quarter?
  • How do Walmart, Kroger, and regional chains compare in each state?
  • Where are we priced above the state average?
  • How do prices move from week to week?

To answer them, a grocery price dashboard tracks these KPIs:

KPIWhat it tells you
Average unit pricePrice per ounce, pound or count, by state and category
State price indexEach state’s average against the national average, set to 100
Price change %Change since last week, month or year
Retailer gapEach retailer’s price against the state average
Promo shareThe share of items on sale in each state
Price spreadThe gap between the cheapest and most expensive store

For example, a state index of 110 means that basket costs 10% more there than the national average. Similarly, an index of 95 means it costs 5% less.

Why Grocery Prices Differ by State and Category

State gaps come from several sources. For instance:

  • Cost of living: in the second quarter of 2026, MERIC’s grocery index put Hawaii at 135.8 and Alaska at 125.1. Meanwhile, California was 110.0, while Mississippi was 94.2 and Oklahoma 94.1.
  • Grocery taxes: eight states still taxed groceries in 2026, such as Idaho at 6%. However, Arkansas and Illinois dropped their state grocery taxes in January 2026.
  • Retailer mix: each state has its own mix of chains, discounters, and store formats.

Categories move differently, too. In its latest outlook, USDA’s Economic Research Service forecast food-at-home prices up 2.4% in 2026. Within that, egg prices are forecast to fall 29.4%, while sugar and sweets rise 6.6%.

For 2027, USDA expects eggs to rise 0.8% and dairy 1.5%. By contrast, fresh vegetables are forecast to dip 0.5%.

Note that shelf prices usually exclude sales tax. So add a tax layer if you want the total a shopper pays.

As a result, one national average hides big gaps. That’s why a grocery price dashboard should break prices down by state and category.

The Data You Need for a Grocery Price Dashboard

You need two kinds of data. First, public benchmarks set the context. Then, store-level prices fill in the detail.

Public Benchmarks

The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes about 70 average food prices nationally. It also publishes them for four regions, where samples allow. In addition, MERIC’s quarterly index compares states, based on voluntary city surveys.

These are useful benchmarks for a grocery price dashboard. However, they don’t show prices by state, retailer, category, and week together. So for a working dashboard, you need store-level prices.

Store-Level Price Data

Store-level data comes from retailer websites, apps, and online storefronts. Typically, each record includes:

Field groupExample fields
StoreRetailer, banner and store ID, as well as city, state and ZIP code
ProductName, brand and size, along with UPC where shown
CategoryCategory and subcategory, such as dairy or eggs
PriceRegular and sale prices, as well as unit price
PromotionOffer text and dates, when shown publicly
TimeCapture date and time

Prices can differ from one ZIP code to the next. For example, our guide to Instacart prices by ZIP code shows how. So most teams use a scheduled feed, such as our USA grocery data API.

How to Calculate Average Prices by State and Category

Averages are easy to get wrong. So follow these steps to keep your grocery price dashboard fair:

  1. Fix a basket: pick a set list of items per category that most stores carry.
  2. Match products: use UPCs where possible, and match sizes for store brands.
  3. Convert to unit prices: use price per ounce, pound, or count, so pack sizes compare.
  4. Sample stores fairly: cover each state’s main retailers, as well as urban and rural ZIP codes.
  5. Pick one price type: use regular, sale, or lowest price, then keep it consistent.
  6. Weight the average: weight by retailer or store count, so one chain doesn’t dominate.
  7. Check outliers: use medians, or trim extreme values, because one error can skew a state.
  8. Index to a base: set the national average to 100, then compare each state against it.

For example, say milk averages $0.031 per ounce nationally and $0.034 in one state. Then that state’s milk index is about 110.

How to Build the Grocery Price Dashboard

Next, load your data into a BI tool, such as Power BI, Tableau, or Looker Studio. Then build four grocery price dashboard pages, each answering one question:

PageMain visualsQuestion it answers
State mapA filled map of the state price indexWhere are prices highest?
Category trendsA line chart of average unit price by category over timeWhich categories are rising?
Retailer comparisonA bar chart of retailer gap by stateWho is cheapest in each state?
Item explorerA table of items, along with price, unit price and promo flagWhich items drive the gap?

Add filters for state, category, retailer, and week. In addition, show the national average on every chart, so users can compare at a glance.

Finally, set a refresh schedule that matches your data. For instance, weekly suits most categories, while daily helps for eggs and fresh produce. In Power BI, shared capacity allows up to eight scheduled refreshes a day.

Who Uses a Grocery Price Dashboard

Different teams use the same grocery price dashboard in different ways, for example:

  • CPG brands: set state-level pricing, then check how retailers price their products.
  • Retailers: benchmark their prices against rivals in each state.
  • Analysts and investors: follow regional price trends by category between official releases.
  • Price comparison sites and media: publish state rankings and basket comparisons.
  • Researchers: study how grocery taxes and retailer mix affect prices.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even so, a few mistakes can skew the results:

  • Comparing pack prices: a 12-pack and a 6-pack need unit prices first.
  • Mixing price types: sale and regular prices need separate views.
  • Sampling too few stores: one store can’t represent a whole state.
  • Ignoring tax: totals need sales tax, although shelf prices don’t.
  • Updating too rarely: quarterly data misses fast moves, such as egg prices.

How FoodSpark Delivers Grocery Price Data

FoodSpark collects public grocery prices from US retailers, store by store. Here’s what you get:

  • Coverage: Walmart, Kroger and its banners, Costco, Safeway, Publix and other US grocers, by store and ZIP code.
  • Fields: regular, sale, loyalty, and unit prices, as well as UPC, category, and promotion details where shown.
  • Refresh: one-time, weekly, daily, or hourly.
  • Delivery: CSV, JSON, XML, REST API or webhook, along with AWS S3, BigQuery, Snowflake or Google Sheets.
  • Free sample: 100 rows in CSV or JSON, so you can test your grocery price dashboard first.

For example, our Kroger API returns regular, sale, and loyalty prices by store. Similarly, our Walmart API covers grocery prices and offers.
